Bivack (meaning shelter), offers a rare opportunity to experience wild Africa. Set between the mighty Limpopo and Mogalakwena Rivers and on the border between South Africa and Botswana, Bivack Bush Safari is a 2500Ha expanse of riverine and Mopani bushveld. We border the Limpopo Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area as well as the Tuli Block in Botswana. The area around us is earmarked as South Africa’s new premier conservation hotspot, where wild dogs, lion, elephants and cheetah will once again roam freely across the borders of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Bivack is also close to a world heritage site, Mapungubwe. Meaning the place of the stone of wisdom, Mapungubwe was the largest kingdom in the African sub-continent and is responsible for the discovery of a wealth of artefacts, including a golden rhino with one horn. Recent diggings at Bivack have also found a 1000 year old site of a lost kingdom on a hill overlooking the great Limpopo River. It is believed that a relative of the great king of Mapungubwe stayed here and that it was part of a trade route along the Limpopo Valley.
The accommodation:
Bivack Bush Safari accommodates 20 guests in intimate 4-star exclusivity. Owner run, your hosts will ensure your stay is tailor-made to suit your own personal requirements. The main camp incorporates seven en-suite chalets, a dining room, open boma area, Hippo Lounge and Bar as well as our mopani-shaped swimming pool. There is also a magnificent wooden deck on the banks of the Mogalakwena River with amazing views.
We believe that guests should be able to choose how they spend their leisure time. Apart from our luxurious accommodation and culinary delights we offer them a wide variety of activities. From a sunset safari drive on the Limpopo river, night drives, fishing for the rapacious yellowfish or bream, guided walks amongst others on Tamboti Island and Bivack Point, where South Africa meets Botswana and where the 2 rivers can be witnessed, or just pampered relaxation while lazing by the pool.
Eagle’s Rock:
On Bivack you will find various open plains and hills along the Limpopo River. One hill in particular, Eagle’s Rock, offers spectacular views over the river valley and the Tuli Block of Botswana. Here a pair of rare Verreaux’s Eagles have nested for decades and raise their young faithfully every year. Quite often the eagles fly right past and look at us directly in the eye!
Rivers all around:
With an impressive 14 km unspoilt river frontage at Bivack, both the Limpopo and Mogalakwena Rivers offer unsurpassed beauty. Waterbuck, bushbuck, giraffe, leopard and elephants have made this their home. During the dry winter months when the rivers cease to flow, there is an abundance of game in the evergreen riverbed area. Kudu, eland, blue wildebeest, impala and a variety of predators frequent the haven created by the water pools and giant trees. Often the cry of the Fish Eagle is heard. The Tuli Block of Botswana which borders the reserve to the north forms a beautiful backdrop of baobab dotted savannah bushveld. The rivers team with yellow fish, bream, mackerel and miniature tiger fish.
